#1 Inocybe Stakes Claim to Industry’s First Unified Infrastructure Virtualization Platform

At this week’s Cloud Computing Expo in NYC, Inocybe Technologies, a privately held company focused on delivering cloud-based network virtualization solutions, will launch the Inocybe Virtualization Platform (IVP), a turnkey solution businesses can use to create a private, community, or global scale public cloud-computing infrastructure. Featuring a plug-and-play architecture, IVP provides a unified virtual infrastructure management platform designed to bridge the gap between cloud computing, DevOps and SDN; one that brings together a variety of network, computing and storage application options to rapidly create virtual data centers in the cloud.

Key features include

  • Public Cloud Integration includes support for Rackspace and Amazon EC2; private cloud integration is via OpenStack-based APIs.
  • Distributed, inter-cloud management supports federation of multiple public and private clouds as part of the physical substrate for virtual infrastructures and management through a single interface.
  • Built-in Cloud and SDN controllers

IVP is a subscriber-based solution that can be deployed either as an on-site installation or hosted solution. It will be commercially available in September and is currently available through an early adopter beta program.

#2 NoviFlow and Inocybe Technologies Announce Real-World Application of Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

In conjunction with the launch of the Inocybe Virtualization Platform (IVP) (insert link to Inocybe IVP post here) at the Cloud Computing Expo, Inocybe Technologies and NoviFlow Inc. announced an agreement to bring together elements of their respective product lines to enable large data center operators to deploy high-performance applications such as advanced firewalls and deep-packet inspection on a single OpenFlow-based network element, in virtualized infrastructures.

The solutions included in the NFV offering:

  • Inocybe Virtualization Platform (IVP): Featuring a plug-and-play architecture, IVP is a unified virtual infrastructure management platform that provides a turnkey solution businesses can use to create a private, community, or global scale public cloud-computing infrastructure.
  • NoviWare® 200: An OpenFlow switching solution that provides high-performance OpenFlow 1.1 and 1.3 switches that run at speeds of 100 Gbps to 200 Gbps.

Mathieu Lemay, Inocybe president and CEO, stated that the two companies are leveraging their respective products, NoviFlow’s NoviWare OpenFlow switch architecture and Inocybe Technologies’ Infrastructure Virtualization Platform (IVP), “to offer high performance network applications for virtual infrastructures that are as efficient as traditional hardware network appliances.”

Targeting data centers and carriers who want to replace special-purpose network appliances with more energy efficient and cost effective solutions, the joint solution is designed to significantly ease introduction and reduce the costs of integrating Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and OpenFlow™ with existing cloud and carrier networks. It will be commercially available in the second half of 2013.

#3 Cyan Launches Blue Orbit, An Interoperability Validation Ecosystem for SDN Applications

Cyan’s Blue Orbit Lab is the first effort within the SDN community to ensure multi-vendor software–defined networks can be easily deployed in production environments. With applicable solution elements provided by ecosystem partners that initially include Accedian Networks, Arista Networks, Boundary, Canonical, Cyan, Embrane, Overture Networks and Ryu, Cyan’s California-based facility validates the deployability of SDN solutions in production networks by testing and demonstrating interoperability among partner SDN solutions.

In announcing the multi-vendor project, Cyan president Michael Hatfield stated  “…we’re at a critical juncture in the development of SDN—unless suppliers step forward and undertake the interoperability testing necessary for smooth SDN rollouts, the promise of SDN may fail to materialize. Blue Orbit fulfills this requirement. ”

By offloading network operators from the exhaustive testing requisite to ensure the interoperability of multi-vendor SDN components, the Blue Orbit project seeks to reduce operator risk in deploying production SDN infrastructure and applications, accelerating service creation and service profitability. Blue Orbit also fosters a best-of-breed approach, allowing operators to choose solution components from multiple partners, with the assurance of interoperability they typically experience only with single-source end-to-end solutions.

At Interop Tokyo, a multi-vendor use case demonstration of inter-datacenter and datacenter-to-enterprise-virtualization illustrated the value of the Blue Orbit Ecosystem in testing SDN use cases and ensuring interoperability in heterogeneous networks.  Cyan, in collaboration with its partners, demonstrated an SDN application spanning enterprise, WAN and data center environments, showing how network operators can offer their customers the ability to dynamically spin up data center virtual machines (VMs), along with virtualized network resources via OpenStack APIs or a web portal:

The use case involved applications running on an enterprise server dynamically placing requests for additional cloud data center virtual machines and associated network resources using OpenStack application program interfaces (APIs) and OpenFlow.

#4 Optical Networker Optelian Joins GTC Interoperability Testing Lab

Georgia Technology Center (GTC), a live lab technology research and deployment facility, announced that Optelian, a global provider of packet-optical networking solutions, is the newest member of the GTC community of network equipment vendors. Optelian’s MPX-9110 Flexible 100G Platform will be the first product to undergo interoperability testing with other GTC member solutions.

GTC, based in Atlanta Georgia, is also home to the Southeast Network Access Point (SNAP), a new Software Defined Network (SDN) Internet Exchange. Through the GTC, the SNAP enables networking equipment vendors to interoperate and test SDN traffic across multiple vendors’ equipment.
