End users today demand and expect more from computer systems, network services and mobile devices than ever before. As a result, service providers are constantly exploring ways to differentiate themselves and optimize capital and operational expenditures.

Until now, innovations in networking have centered around increasing the throughput or packet forwarding of network devices such as routers and switches. But those innovations do nothing to help providers distinguish between the bandwidth needs of a user watching videos versus one browsing the Internet.
As SDN changes the way networks are designed and deployed, it also offers service providers the chance to build networks with increased application awareness, or intelligence about L4-L7 protocol attributes and delivery requirements. The paper provides a concise overview of current request routing methods (like PBR, BGP) and their limitations, then examines how an SDN-based, application-aware routing architecture could help address those problems.
